Maitreya Buddha

Maitreya (Sanskrit: Maitreya), known as Mireuk in Korea and also called Ajita or the Bodhisattva Jassi, is the future Buddha destined to descend to this world 5.67 billion years after Śākyamuni’s passing to save all beings. His coming is believed to usher in an ideal realm of purity and harmony.

Belief in Maitreya entered Goguryeo with Buddhism and spread widely during the Three Kingdoms period. It inspired prayers, temple foundations, and cultural traditions across Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, and is frequently recorded in the Samguk Yusa. During times of unrest, some leaders even claimed to be Maitreya to influence the populace.

Notable examples of Maitreya imagery include the Stone Bodhisattva from the Gamsansa Temple site and the Gilt-bronze Pensive Bodhisattva.
