Stone Artifacts from the Tomb of Yi Choe-eung, Prince Hongin

This is the muninseok (civil official stone statue), sindobi (spirit path stele), and mangjuseok (stone pillar) that were originally placed at the tomb of Heungin-gun Yi Choe-eung (1815–1882), located in Deoksan, Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do.

Yi Choe-eung was a civil official of the late Joseon period. His clan origin was Jeonju, his courtesy name was Yangbaek, and his pen name was Sanhyang. He was the third son of Namyeon-gun Yi Gu and the elder brother of Heungseon Daewongun Yi Ha-eung. Granted the title of Heungin-gun, he became a key figure within the Min clan–dominated political faction, and he was known to have had a strained relationship with his younger brother, Heungseon Daewongun.

The muninseok displays refined and dynamic postures, carved with a high level of sophistication and precision. The sindobi was likewise created on a large and imposing scale. As such, royal tombs were constructed with far greater formality than those of ordinary scholar-officials, and this distinction is clearly evident in both their scale and appearance.
