Muninseok Returned from Japan
Muninseok are human-shaped stone sculptures placed at tombs to protect them from evil spirits, often accompanied by animal-shaped stone figures. Unfortunately, many muninseok were smuggled to Japan during the Japanese colonial period.
Chun Shin-il, chairman of Sejoong Corporation, aspired to recover these long-lost cultural assets, by then scattered around the world, and restore Korea’s national pride. In 2000, after learning of Mr. Kusaka Mamoru, a Japanese citizen who owned hundreds of ancient Korean stone sculptures, Chairman Chun made numerous visits to Japan to persuade him to return them.
In 2001, Chairman Chun’s persistence succeeded in bringing more than seventy precious Korean stone sculptures back to Korea. These returned works testify to the strength and dignity of Korean stone art.
