The Age of Stone Figures
“Commanded to Guard the Immortal Soul”
Janggunseok (Stone Warrior Statues) are stone figures placed to protect tombs, most commonly found at royal tombs or the graves of high-ranking officials. Influenced by Chinese funerary traditions, they began appearing in royal tombs from the Unified Silla period, when the tomb system became more formally established.
Depicted wearing armor and either holding or carrying a sword the symbol of a general these statues present a dignified and authoritative presence. The gwimyeon (demon-face) motifs carved into the sword hilt and the shoulders of the armor symbolize protection: they were believed to ward off evil spirits and safeguard the general as he went into battle.
